Luis Bordonada grew up in El Paso dreaming of being on TV – just like his idol, Johnny Canales.

Fast-forward a few decades, and Bordonada is portraying the legendary host in the Netflix series “Selena: The Series,” which is streaming on Netflix.

“Playing Johnny Canales was incredible and nerve-wracking at the same time,” Bordonada says. “He’s so different, and I thought we were so different. As I was learning more about him, I found so many similarities. He’s a veteran. He’s from Texas. He’s an immigrant. Hew grew up speaking Spanglish, like me. It was crazy how similar we are.”

The series tells the story of Selena Quintanilla before she became the Queen of Tejano music.

The series explores her journey from singing small gigs to becoming the most successful female Latin artist of all time – and the years of hard work and sacrifice the Quintanilla family navigated together.

Canales gave Selena one of her many big breaks.

The series gives viewers a glimpse of Canales, who is responsible for spreading the gospel of Tejano, conjunto, norteño and other regional Mexican and Texan genres internationally through “The Johnny Canales Show.”

Bordonada says Canales was significant in that he would bring up-and-coming artists onto his show and highlight them to a huge audience.

“It was incredible to see and learn from the voice I heard growing up,” he says. “The most nerve-wracking is that the man is still alive. He’s going to see it, and I hope he at least likes it. There should be movies just on him, because his life has been so full. He’s such an integral part of Chicano and Southwest culture.”

Bordonada was on set in Texas for nearly three months, although the production filmed three seasons.

“The buzz behind the series has been phenomenal,” he says. “The series managed to get all the right people to tell a story filled with heart.”

Bordonada moved to New Mexico when he got out of the military and has appeared in numerous New Mexico-filmed projects. His break came in 2010 with “The Book of Eli.”

Bordonada has continued to pick projects that are full of diversity.

In 2012, he was cast in “Bless Me, Ultima,” which featured a Latino-heavy cast.

He also had a role in the series “Vida,” which aired on Starz. This production was also lauded for having Latino representation.

With “Selena: The Series,” Bordonada finds himself in familiar territory.

“We’ve been talking about equal representation for so long,” he says. “Being part of projects that are making it possible for Latinos to be seen is significant. To represent our people is humbling. It’s hard to express how lucky I feel. I hope that the series like these continue to give us a voice.”
