Do-It-Yourself: How to Build Your Own Land Grant Trophy (Part III) - Roar Lions Roar

maknains.blogspot.com

In the last two years, we have tried to show you how you can have your very own DIY Land Grant Trophy at home. With Penn State and bitter rival Michigan State set to square off for the right to this work of art once again, it's time to revisit our favorite past time.

Two years ago was my Mona Lisa as I made the trophy with some household materials. Last season, I decided to switch it up and made an edible Land Grant Trophy that was very delicious but took more time than I would be willing to admit. In an effort to change things up this year, I decided to raid the kids' Lego collection for this year's model. I've included instructions so you can follow along at home. But for now, wait no longer because I present to you the 2020 Lego Land Grant Trophy.

Materials

  • Brown Legos (for the fine wood finish)
  • Silver Legos (these were for the winners' plates on the side)
  • Scooby-Doo Lego (In lieu of the Nittany Lion)
  • Random Green Lego Guy (In Lieu of the Spartan)
  • Note Card (Land Grant Trophy Placard)
  • Roar Lions Roar Pin (A personalized blog touch)

Step 1: Separate the Legos

My son has a giant bag of Legos which is an assortment of all of the pieces accumulated between him and his older brother over the last thirteen years. I tried to separate the brown ones from the rest and also grabbed a few silver ones to reflect the placards on the side of the trophy.

Step 2: Build the Base

As you are probably aware if you have gotten this far, the base of the Land Grant Trophy may be the most important part. In reality, it has to be because with as much as that thing weighs, a weak base would crumble and we can't have that.

Step 3: Don't Forget the Shelving!

The Land Grant Trophy is full of quirks, but none more quirky than the random shelving that is strategically placed throughout its glory. Adding these shelves is super important as they hold the Nittany Lion and Spartan as they fight for land granted to them by their respective states.

Step 4: Finish the Top and Add the "Lion" and "Spartan"

I mentioned the shelves in the last step, but as you can see here, this is why they are so imperative. Before you can add the designer pieces, you cannot forget the wall at the top of the trophy. This wall may be low on fanfare, but it adds a nice finishing touch to the top of the trophy. I added Scooby-Doo and a random angry-looking green Lego guy to represent the Nittany Lion and the Spartan. As for the trophy on top, well we had an Allen Robinson Lego available, and if anyone knows about going up and getting something, it's No. 8 (even if he only has one arm).

Step 5: The Finishing Touches

For the finishing touches, I used an index card for the Land Grant Trophy placard that is on the bottom of the trophy. I did not have print outs this year of Penn State's Old Main and Michigan State's Beaumont Tower so I swapped that out with a Roar Lions Roar pin and placed that where those pictures would go.

And there you have it, yet another do-it-yourself Land Grant Trophy. I know many of you have lots of time on your hands so if you make one yourself, send us a pic or add it in the comments. Here's to hoping that Penn State can retain ownership of this majestic beast for another season. Happy building!
