Izzy’s space has been filled. And there will be ice cream. - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

The ice cream tradition will continue in the former Izzy’s Ice Cream space in St. Paul with a well-known name in the scoop shop world.

The Marshall Avenue spot — left vacant earlier this year when Izzy’s closed its original ice cream shop after 20 years — has been filled with two new tenants that will each take a portion of the space: Nelson’s Ice Cream and Vikings & Goddesses Pie Co.

Vikings & Goddesses is up and running as a wholesale bakery via pre-orders while Nelson’s plans to roll out a concept called Nellie’s next spring. Here are the details:

— The team behind Nelson’s Ice Cream (nelsonsicecream.biz) are laying out the blueprint for an offshoot of their two Nelson’s scoop shops in Stillwater and on Snelling Avenue in St. Paul. The Marshall Avenue one will be a sister shop called Nellie’s featuring not only traditional cups and cones, but also custom ice cream cookie sandwiches that will be the flagship product. Customers will be able to build their own ice cream cookie sandwiches by choosing among ice cream flavors and then sandwiching it between cookies or bars, also of their choosing.

“After that, you can pick out things like M&M’s, sprinkles, Funfetti Cereal that we can roll the sandwich into,” said Daved Najarian, co-owner of Nelson’s Ice Cream. “Then if you want the cookie to go through a panini press to get it warm we will do that too. It caramelizes the cookie and warms it up but leaves the ice cream fully frozen.”

Najarian said the family is working with a local bakery to provide cookies and bars and also hopes to work with a company to create a few custom ice cream flavors.

For Najarian, going into the Izzy’s spot and carrying on the tradition of serving ice cream in the space means a lot.

“My wife went to the University of St. Thomas and so did my sister. When I would visit, we used to go to Izzy’s all the time,” he said. “People already know this space as an ice cream spot. Hopefully we’ll do them justice and keep it fun.”

If all goes well, Nellie’s will roll out at 2034 Marshall Ave. next spring.

— Meanwhile, next door at 2036 Marshall Ave. and also occupying part of the former Izzy’s space, Vikings & Goddesses Pie Co. has taken flight. The local wholesale bakery — which has made a name for itself with pop-ups around town, the Mill City Farmers Market as well as local coffee shops and co-ops — is taking preorders for scheduled pickups and deliveries for now. The wholesale bakery is currently not open to the public outside of designated pickup hours.

“It’s just for the time being because of the pandemic, and we’ll look at it again when it’s safe to reopen,” said owner Rachel Anderson, adding that plans are to eventually open with a counter space.

In the meantime, pie orders including bestsellers such as Caramel Apple and Pecan can be ordered online (vikingsandgoddessespiecompany.com) for Tuesday pickup or delivery ($25 purchase minimum for delivery) in the Twin Cities and select suburbs. And for the holidays, special Eggnog Creme Brulee, Cranberry Crisp and Peppermint Mocha Chess pies are also available. In addition to pies, take-and-bake options such as croissants and pie crusts are also on the roster. Ingredients are sourced locally, incorporating products such as Baker’s Field Flour and Hope Creamery butter.

Anderson is not new to the pie world. In addition to building the Vikings & Goddesses brand most recently, she has been the pastry chef at places such as Octo and Revival (that butterscotch pie was her creation!) as well as worked on pastry teams at restaurants such as Bellecour.
