The Devil made me do it - Colorado County Citizen

A young pastor and his wife moved to a new church. They were tight on cash, so the young pastor told his wife not to buy anything except groceries. She went shopping, and while out, she saw a beautiful dress and decided to try it on. It fit and looked perfect. She remembered what her husband said - and bought the dress anyway. Her husband was furious since money was so tight. She said she was only going to try it on and, boy, did it look good in front! The devil kept tempting her to buy the dress. She told her husband that she rebuked the devil by saying, “Get thee behind me, Satan!” He did and he said, “Looks great back here, too!”

So, she bought it.

Do you blame-shift or blame-share? When we do or say something that’s not right, do we shift blame onto someone or something else? How many times have we heard children say, “Johnny made me do it.” Well, let’s not lay the blame all on Johnny. Can you count the times when you have said, “Well, they do it?”

Or do we blame-shift when we sin and say, “The Devil made me do it!” It’s easy to place the blame squarely on someone else’s shoulders-even on the Devil’s shoulders. The one great thing as the middle child is I always had someone to blame! I may not be entirely blameless as I once thought. We all have faults to some degree. We slip and fall. We sin in thought, word, and deed. That doesn’t make us a bad person. It just doesn’t make us the perfect person we see ourselves.

The Apostle Paul is a great example of owning up to one’s faults and sins. He readily admits that he slips and falls. Yet he doesn’t shift to blame the Sadducee when he is repeatedly punished for his belief in Christ and say,” All the other Apostles are doing it!” He doesn’t attempt to share the blame and say, “Well, the Holy Spirit made me do it!” What Paul does is take on the blame himself, all while trying his best to be blameless before man and God, knowing full well he will sometimes fall. Doing this and trying to remain in God’s Word, he can have a clear conscience because he is taking the blame onto himself. So, when you fall, get up, dust your pants off, and don’t blame someone else for your problems. Acts 24:16 (NASB) -“In view of this, I also do my best to maintain a blameless conscience both before God and before other people, always.”
