The 2021-22 NHL season will begin Oct. 12, and in the coming days, weeks and months, there could be plenty of players reaching milestones. Here's a look at some that could occur:
GOALS
766: Alex Ovechkin -- The Washington Capitals forward is sixth in NHL history with 730 goals and can climb into third before the season ends. He's one behind Marcel Dionne for fifth (731), 11 behind Brett Hull for fourth (741) and 36 from tying Jaromir Jagr for third (766). Last season Ovechkin scored 24 goals, the first time in his 16 NHL seasons he didn't score at least 30.
500: Sidney Crosby -- The Pittsburgh Penguins center needs 14 goals to become the 46th player in NHL history with 500. He has scored at least 24 goals in 13 of his 16 seasons, is the Penguins leader in games played (1,039) and is second in goals (486), assists (839) and points (1,325), trailing Mario Lemieux in each.
400: Seven players are within reach, the closest being Penguins forward Jeff Carter, who needs one goal. Dallas Stars forward Joe Pavelski (six), New York Islanders forward Zach Parise (seven) and Arizona Coyotes forward Phil Kessel (nine) are within 10 goals. Tampa Bay Lightning forward Corey Perry is 14 away. Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron (25) and Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares (36) could also hit the milestone.

POINTS
1,400: Crosby, Ovechkin -- The Penguins captain, who needs 75 points, has scored at least that many 10 times, the last in 2018-19 (100). Ovechkin, the Capitals captain, needs 80 points. He last reached that mark in 2018-19 (89 points).
1,000: Ryan Getzlaf scored 17 points in 48 games for the Anaheim Ducks last season, the fewest in his 16 NHL seasons, and needs 18 for 1,000. Nicklas Backstrom of the Capitals needs 20 points, Jason Spezza of the Maple Leafs needs 30, and Bergeron needs 83.
GAMES PLAYED
1,700: Joe Thornton -- Entering his 24th NHL season, the Florida Panthers forward ranks sixth in games played and needs 20 to reach the milestone. Zdeno Chara would reach 1,690 games if he played all 82 this season. The 45-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Islanders this offseason.
1,000: There are 16 players within 81 games of the mark. The closest are Islanders defenseman Andy Greene (12), Winnipeg Jets forward Blake Wheeler (19), Arizona Coyotes forward Loui Eriksson (23) and Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty (25). Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews (57) and Penguins center Evgeni Malkin (60) are also closing in.
CONSECUTIVE GAMES PLAYED
964: Keith Yandle -- The Philadelphia Flyers defenseman has played 922 consecutive games and needs 42 more to tie Doug Jarvis for the longest consecutive games played streak in NHL history. Kessel, who has played 900 straight, could also match Jarvis.
GOALIE WINS
500: Marc-Andre Fleury -- Entering his first season with the Blackhawks, Fleury ranks third in NHL history with 492 wins. He needs eight more to reach 500 and trails Patrick Roy (551) and Martin Brodeur (691). Fleury has at least 20 wins in 12 of the past 13 seasons.
400: Carey Price -- Although it may be a longshot, Price is 40 wins away from becoming the 14th player with 400 NHL wins. The Montreal Canadiens goalie last had that many in a season in 2014-15 (44), so the milestone may have to wait another season.

COACHING WINS
1,000: Joel Quenneville -- Entering his third season with the Panthers, Quenneville is 962-572-150 with 77 ties in 1,761 games during 24 seasons with the Panthers, Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues. Quenneville needs 38 wins to become the second NHL coach with at least 1,000 (Scotty Bowman, 1,244).
900: Barry Trotz -- Entering his fourth season with the Islanders, Trotz is 877-635-158 with 60 ties in 1,730 games during 22 seasons with the Islanders, Capitals and Nashville Predators. He needs 23 wins to join Quenneville and Bowman in the 900-wins club.
GAMES COACHED
1,800: Quenneville (39 games) and Trotz (70 games) each is expected to coach his 1,800th game this season. Only Bowman (2,141) has coached more games in NHL history.
1,700: Paul Maurice -- Entering his ninth season with the Jets, Maurice is 762-670-125 with 99 ties in 1,656 games during 23 seasons with the Jets, Carolina Hurricanes, Maple Leafs and Hartford Whalers. Maurice, who ranks sixth in NHL history in wins, needs 44 games to join Trotz, Quenneville and Bowman as the only coaches to reach 1,700 games.
1,600: Lindy Ruff -- Entering his second season with the New Jersey Devils, Ruff is 755-584-132 with 78 ties in 1,549 games during 20 seasons with the Devils, Dallas Stars and Buffalo Sabres. Ruff, who ranks seventh in NHL history in wins, needs 51 games to become the sixth coach with at least that many.
