The NY Rangers are sure to give their fans fits if they come out of their second round series against the Carolina Hurricanes. Once again, the Rangers are facing elimination and need a big effort to stay alive.
After squandering a golden opportunity to win Game 5 on the road, the Rangers put up their worst performance of the round with a 17 shot effort. Despite Igor Shesterkin’s 31 stops to keep them in it, they would eventually fall 3-1 on Thursday night.
Game 6 is now at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening and if home ice advantage continues to hold true as it has for five games, the Rangers will get to Raleigh for a Game 7 on Monday.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t play our best game,” Gerard Gallant said. “We have to win one game in [Carolina] to win the series. Hopefully that’s Game 7.”
NY Rangers confident
The New York Rangers were down in the last series against the Pittsburgh Penguins 3 games to 1. They were able to roar back and take it with an Artemi Panarin OT goal in Game 7.
“We’ve been in this position before and I like our chances on home ice,” Ryan Strome said after the loss. “It’s been a pretty good hockey series. We’ve got a chance to push it to 7 and that’s all we’re really worried about.
“We’ve played a lot of must win games lately and done a good job. When I look around the room the feel in that dressing room is super-confident at all times. We seem to like being in this position and we look forward to doing what we did before.”
This is truly a resilient group, and it’s hard not to take them at their word after posting 27 comeback wins during the regular season. They’ve added to that with winning three straight elimination games against the Penguins and being down in each one of those contests.
“We haven’t really been up in too many games or in a series,” Andrew Copp said before the Game 5 defeat. “If we ever get [a series lead] we’ll see how we handle it. I think the never-die mentality has been in this team from Day One, and I’ve kind of felt that from walking in a couple of months ago.”
So now the Rangers will need to dig deep and find their intestinal fortitude. That seems very doable since the Hurricanes are Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde away from PNC Arena. However, if the Rangers want to get to the Eastern Conference Final, they will need to play their best game of the playoffs in Raleigh.
