“Berta, Berta,” a short, passionate play now running at Hoboken’s Mile Square Theatre, includes the tagline, “An Epic Love Story.” And like all epics, this play grows out of an oral tradition that at some point in history found a legible record.

Here, playwright Angelica Chéri brings us into the world of the traditional Black work song “Berta, Berta,” performed perhaps most famously (or at least most relevantly to the world of American theater) in August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson.” The song’s protagonist is a man sending his love and saying farewell to Alberta, the woman he left at home when he was taken to the infamous Parchman Farm, a Mississippi prison farm that treated inmates like slaves in the post-Reconstruction, Jim Crow era.
