DENISON — Connor Carver spent the first half of Friday’s game at Denison-Schleswig playing the quarterback position to near perfection.

In the second half, the Fort Dodge senior flipped the script and brought an impressive 28-7 victory home by rattling the cages of his counterpart over and over again.

Carver was everywhere in the Dodgers’ dominant win, passing for 140 yards, running for 139 more and laying the lumber with four highlight-reel sacks from the outside linebacker position. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Bemidji State University recruit had three first-half touchdowns and 238 yards from scrimmage — 137 through the air and 101 on the ground — before virtually living in the Monarch backfield the rest of the way as a blitzing defensive standout.

“Connor Carver is the true definition of a football player,” FDSH head coach Nik Moser said. “If you need him to make a clutch throw, he’ll make a clutch throw. If you need him to pick up the tough yards (running the ball), he’ll lower his shoulder and fight for it. And I think he had a lot of fun laying out some hits instead of being on the receiving end.

“Anytime your quarterback has more sacks (defensively) than the number of times he gets sacked, you’re in for a good night.”

Carver’s smile beamed when asked about the opportunity to play both ways. He saw the field occasionally against Spencer a few weeks ago, but his extended efforts were needed last night in the absence of freshman standout Dreshaun Ross, who is in North Carolina for the Super 32 Challenge wrestling tournament.

“It was a lot of fun,” Carver said. “I’m learning a lot as I go, and thankfully, my teammates and coaches have really helped get me caught up to speed on what to do and where to be.

“The whole defense played a great game. We took turns and had some big plays. Just having confidence and being able to execute after preparing all week – it’s an awesome feeling. A big team win.”

Carver was far from a one-man gang. Fellow senior Orion Larson-Trott rushed 25 times for 89 yards, and junior receiver Grant Williams tossed a 27-yard touchdown to Javion Jondle on a double pass for the only points of the second half.

The defense was on all evening long, surrendering just 14 net rushing yards thanks to eight tackles for loss on Monarch junior quarterback Luke Wiebers. Isaiah Caldwell added a pair of sacks for Fort Dodge (4-4 overall, 2-2 in Class 4A, District 1), with Kaleb Lynch and Larson-Trott contributing one each.

Denison-Schleswig (4-4, 2-2) struck first with a short touchdown midway through the first quarter. The Monarchs had 86 yards of offense on that series, then just 72 on their final six possessions combined.

The tide began to turn almost immediately following the Monarchs’ lone score. The Dodgers answered with a 14-play, 75-yard drive capped by a short Carver TD run, and after forcing a punt, they grinded out a 19-play, 89-yard scoring march that used over seven minutes of clock in the second quarter for a 15-7 advantage they would never relinquish.

A 37-yard pass from Carver to Nate Opande right before the end of the first half set up a 3-yard TD strike from Carver to Williams with 18 seconds left on the clock. It was suddenly 22-7 and the visitors were firmly in control, with 294 yards and 17 first downs heading into the locker room.

“It all started up front,” Moser said. “It was great to see both our offensive and defensive lines impose their will. When you know you can run the ball by controlling (the trenches) and bleed clock like that, it’s just a confidence that builds as the game progresses.

“Really, it was our most complete effort start to finish this year. We put a couple of wrinkles in with Connor running the ball more, and once we saw what was working, we felt we could physically and mentally take control. I’m just very proud of our effort.”

Jondle passed Trey Mosley for second on the school’s all-time charts for career touchdown catches. The senior had a relatively quiet night statistically, but constantly drew a double team from the D-S defense and also made an acrobatic leaping grab of a high snap on a punt that he turned into a 44-yard boot early in the fourth quarter. Already in the shadow of their own end zone, it would have been a safety if not for Jondle’s save.

Carver had two of his sacks on the same Monarch possession to open the third quarter, then landed another pair on consecutive snaps in the fourth – following Jondle’s punt – to back D-S from midfield into a 3rd-and-34.

“When we’re able to establish the run, it opens up so much for us to be balanced and more unpredictable on offense,” said Carver, who passed Randy Reiners on the program’s all-time passing touchdown charts with 40 in his two-plus year career. “Credit the guys up front and our receivers and backs for blocking and setting the tone.

“Tucker (Pederson), Orion, Kaleb and the others were great on defense. They’re dogs. I was just along for the ride.”

Fort Dodge closes the regular season on Friday at home against Le Mars (5-3, 2-2). The Bulldogs shocked No. 9 Spencer last night, 38-28, handing the Tigers (6-2, 3-1) their first District 1 loss.
