In the entryway of a brownstone in Brooklyn, on a wall of typeface nameplates, there is one lettered piece that looks like a vintage gift tag. The feather-pen script is instantly unmistakable as the style of Romilly Newman.
As something of a wunderkind, the 25-year-old chef and food stylist has carved out quite the name for herself over the past decade. At the age of 11, Romilly appeared in a CBS segment about her YouTube channel Little Girl in the Kitchen. At 13 she became the youngest contestant ever to compete on Food Network’s Chopped. At 19 she began working at Cherry Bombe magazine, shifting afterward into full-time food styling for clients including Soho House and Oscar de la Renta. Today, alongside styling gigs, Romilly is a recipe and restaurant editor for Athena Calderone’s brand Eyeswoon.
Romilly is just like her home: Her presence is pristine, warm, welcoming, and decidedly unfussy. Even Luna—the curly-haired lagotto romagnolo, or Italian truffle-hunting dog, who gives me a wet greeting—is suitably elegant.
The apartment is entirely open, flooded with light from both ends. Situated on a quiet brownstone-lined block in Cobble Hill, it’s one of a kind. Gorgeous crown moldings top the walls, which are paired with rich lacquered hardwood floors and a built-in fireplace. The array of vintage furnishings, ranging from French antiques to American midcentury-modern pieces, feel almost hand-tailored to the apartment. From clothes to decor and barware, collecting secondhand has become a passion for Romilly. “It’s the attention to detail and the thoughtfulness of these pieces, [it’s] just kind of unheard of these days,” she explains.
