Bricker: Law enforcement moms want to be super-moms and do it all, not unlike other moms - Lansing State Journal

Having a law enforcement officer mom is just like having a regular mom, except from the beginning, she forms a pact to information share with all of your friends’ moms.

She has eyes and ears spanning three counties.

She understands ‘expectation of privacy’ better than most; yet still regularly takes care of your clean laundry.

And she grounds you preemptively to keep you safe.

Twenty-seven years ago, when I first hired on as a police officer, I was already a mom.

As I near retirement, I look back in wonder at my naivete.

I was young, idealistic and clueless as to the impact my career choice could ultimately have on my own little family, which included two amazing sons.

Sure, they grew up doing cool stuff – such as going to the range, learning to shoot, having pressure points practiced on them and learning about electricity.

However, there were other normal things they did not get. I was not there to tuck them in every night, I didn’t make every concert, play or sporting event – and there were many missed holidays and birthdays.

Law enforcement moms, not unlike other moms, want to do it all.

We are courageous and fierce. We want to be Super Mom; to lead the charge, clear the path, arrest all the bad people and still be able to make the school Valentine’s Day party on Thursday.

When we can’t, it hurts.

So we pray. We pray we are on the right path; we pray we are doing the right things for the little people we love most in this world; and hope it will all pay off in the end.

We pray the world will be a little better place for them and all of you to live – and we pray to also make it through, so we may enjoy life together with our family, for many years to come.

This Mother’s Day also kicks off National Police Week.

Please say a special prayer for the children who have lost their moms and dads this past year, and keep all law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice – by laying down their lives so that we may continue to live – in your thoughts and prayers.

‘Greater love hath no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends’ ~ John 15:13

Sgt. Kelly Bricker is deputy sheriff at the Eaton County Sheriff's Department.
