Perhaps the best way to put it – and each day moving forward – is that as of Tuesday, May 5, at 2 p.m. ET, Notre Dame football versus the Naval Academy in Dublin, Ireland is still on.
How about on May 6? May 25? June 10?
As of May 5, it’s a go.
“At this point it’s still on the schedule and as (Navy Director of Athletics Chet (Gladchuk) mentioned, our focus – in part because there’s no reason to have a different focus -- is on moving forward toward it,” said Notre Dame Vice President and Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick said Tuesday.
Swarbrick’s comments, made in a Zoom meeting with the media, echoed the words of Gladchuk.
“They still remain very positive over there,” said Gladchuk on The Paul Finebaum Show. “People in Ireland remain very positive over there. We all are. People in Ireland have not given up on the game. We’re still very optimistic on it.”
A week earlier, the Irish government announced that a ban on gatherings of 5,000 people will remain in place through the end of August. That news seemed to put an end to Notre Dame vs. Navy in Aviva Stadium. But Gladchuk said to the Capital Gazette that he was told by government officials in Ireland that the ban was not applicable to sporting events.
Swarbrick understands the risks involved in following through with the plan to open the season in Dublin, but the timetable does not dictate that a decision be finalized, at least not on May 5.
“We get more information every day,” Swarbrick said. “We get more information from Ireland. We get a better sense of the state of college football generally and whether it can begin on time. But until so many of the blanks are filled in, we’re not at a point yet to do anything other than plan for it.
“Having said that, we recognize the risk, we recognize all the things that could happen in the next weeks and month to cause us to decide we can’t do that. At present, it’s still on the calendar and we’re still preparing as if we’re going to play it.”
