Open seat to be filled on Boston School Committee to be delayed, process to restart - Boston Herald

A vacancy on the Boston School Committee set to be filled by Mayor Martin Walsh will now be delayed after his original selection withdrew their name from consideration, according to spokesman Nick Martin.

Two open seats on the school committee — one four-year position left by the expiring term of Michael O’Neill and a one-year term left by former chairman Michael Loconto were available.

Loconto resigned in October after mocking Asian American names during a virtual school committee meeting. His term was set to expire in Dec. 2021.

O’Neill was reappointed and named vice chair of the committee during a Monday night meeting.

However the other seat remains unfilled after Walsh’s selection could not accept the role. Now the process will restart completely and as quickly as possible, according to Martin.

The Citizens Nominating Panel made of parents, teachers and other stakeholders had submitted a list of applicants for Walsh to choose from for Loconto’s seat including Nicole Christian Brathwaite, Sharon Hinton, Lorena Lopera and Leidy Quiceno.

Martin would not say which candidate was Walsh’s selection. He also could not disclose why the person did not take the role. He did not know when the new school committee member would be chosen or if the candidates from the original list will appear on the new list.

Under the state legislation that established the appointed school committee, “the Mayor shall strive to appoint individuals who reflect the racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of the city.”
