12. The strange death of activist Derek “Sarge” Soberal still haunts. Reacting to the pandemic in March, he lit himself on fire and stabbed himself in the chest. It was troubling but highlighted the need for serious mental health support going forward. Premier Doug Ford, Health Minister Christine Elliott and Mental Health and Addictions Minister Michael Tibollo have met that challenge with millions of dollars. We don’t want to see this again.

11. Karima Mehrab, 37, known as Karima Baloch, was found dead in December at the pier on Centre Island where her purse was located. 9. Scarborough’s Akil Thomas, the last player to make Team Canada, scored the gold-medal winning goal against Russia at the World Juniors in Czech Republic. The Los Angeles King’s prospect was the toast of the country and joined Paul Henderson, Darryl Sittler, Mike Bossy, Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby in that special winning goal club.

8. The year 2020 was not so bad for David Ayres who not only played goal in an NHL game in February but also won it. The Maple Leafs and Marlies backup goalie and part-time Zamboni driver came in as the emergency netminder after both Carolina Hurricanes backstoppers were hurt. Wearing #90, he stopped eight shots for the win and was the game’s first star. His stick is now in the Hockey Hall Fame. This is one mask story from 2020 I can’t get enough of.
