ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett expounded Thursday on why quarterback Russell Wilson wore a wristband with a play sheet on it for the first time this season in the 21-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars Oct. 30 in London.

The Broncos (3-5) had some early-season struggles with the play clock -- four of their five delay-of-game penalties in the first two games of the season -- and wanted to be more efficient on how they communicated with Wilson and get the plays in from Hackett to Wilson.

“As a play designer sometimes you want to get a little creative and those things can get a little bit verbose,’’ Hackett said. “You want to have to have it so it’s easier, instead of having to call it then communicate it. It also helps with crowd noise, if you have crowd noise it goes from him listening to me to [just] one wristband number and then he can go in there and communicate to the guys properly.’’

Offensive coordinator Justin Outten added, “typically it’s the [plays] with … a lot more moving parts."

In a radio appearance this week, Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had praised quarterback Geno Smith for wearing one during games to make play-calling more efficient. Carroll said there had been “reluctance to that, so we didn’t do that’’ in the past and while Carroll did not refer to Wilson by name, Wilson missed only three games at quarterback for the Seahawks in the previous 10 seasons.

“I don’t know exactly what he said, but [we] won a lot of games there without one on my wrist,’’ Wilson said before practice Wednesday. “I didn’t know winning or losing mattered if you wore a wristband or not. I think I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure that we’re rolling, and moving, and everything else. The few times I’ve definitely worn a wristband depending on the gameplan, what we’ve got called and all that stuff.’’

Wilson wore a wristband against the Jaguars and was 18-of-30 passing for 252 yards to go with a touchdown in the game. Hackett has said Wilson was part of the decision to use the wristband and that if all involved believe it’s helps an offense that has scored 16 or fewer points six times this season, Wilson will keep using it as many quarterbacks around the league do each week.

“We’ve been looking at everything and been thinking anything we can do to help our process, our offense, do whatever we have to do,’’ Hackett said. “ … We just always want to evaluate everything and try to find a way to get better, if that’s going to help us get better then why not do it.

“ … If it helps why not use it? … If it gives you some kind of advantage or it helps you, then we want to do everything we can.’’
