A former first-round pick, Kareem Jackson was already a well-established starter for Houston in 2013 when undrafted — and unheralded — rookie A.J. Bouye made the team.
Four-year teammates as cornerbacks with the Texans, Jackson and Bouye were reunited following the Broncos’ move to acquire Bouye from Jacksonville in March. Only this time, Jackson is a safety and Bouye remains a cornerback.
Bouye will be the Broncos’ No. 1 cornerback, replacing Chris Harris, who signed with the Los Angeles Chargers.
“I know what (Bouye is) capable of,” Jackson said during a media conference. “I’ve seen him since Day 1 when he got into this league as a young kid out of UCF. He was always talented and then once he kind of (added) the mental aspect to his game, he kind of took off.”
Bouye played one defensive snap as a rookie but started 19 games over the next three years. The Jaguars signed him in March 2017 and he played at least 827 snaps in his three seasons. He has 14 interceptions (all in the last six years) and made the Pro Bowl in ’17 (six interceptions).
“He’s very capable; he can do it all,” Jackson said. “He can (play) press (coverage). He can play off (coverage). He’s a good tackler. He’s one of those guys, if he needed to, could follow (the opponent’s top receiver). I’m looking forward to seeing how much he has progressed and seeing him on a day-to-day basis and how much we can help each other and learn from each other and help the younger guys.”
Miller’s new cause. Via Twitter on Wednesday, Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller announced the “Von Sacks Covid Campaign.”
“There are thousands of kids in my home states of Colorado and Texas who are unable to get daily meals because schools are closed for the foreseeable future,” Miller said in a video.
Miller’s goal is to provide 580,000 meals to students in need. The website is vonsackscovid.org.
Last month, Miller announced he had contracted the coronavirus, but said last week he had tested negative for COVID-19.
Schedule soon. In dueling three-hour television programs on NFL Network and ESPN, the league will unveil the full 2020 schedule on Thursday. Thirty minutes ahead of the broadcast, individual teams can post their schedule on their social media platforms.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, speculation has centered on the first month of the season being non-conference and/or non-divisional games.
The Broncos’ list of opponents …
Home: Kansas City, Las Vegas, L.A. Chargers, Buffalo, Miami, New Orleans, Tampa Bay and Tennessee.
Away: Kansas City, Las Vegas, L.A. Chargers, New England, N.Y. Jets, Atlanta, Carolina and Pittsburgh.
The Broncos play six games against 2019 playoff teams.
