3 adventure-filled illustrated books for children and adults, too - OCRegister

Summer is winding down and the kids are heading back to school, but there are still plenty of reasons to want to get away from, well, everything right now. The most convenient journey, however, might be into the pages of a richly illustrated book.

We gathered up three intrepid titles for children and those (cough) a little older to point the way to adventures still to be had this season.

Get going into Gotham with this dynamic book revealing the secrets and stories of Batman’s hometown, which also coincidentally happens to be the base of another notable, billionaire Bruce Wayne. The book goes deep into Wayne Manor, the Batcave, Arkham Asylum and the city’s underground with plenty of background on the characters to be found there.

From remote Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic Ocean to the depths of the Marianas Trench — with side trips to Queen Elizabeth’s private chambers and alien-friendly Area 51 — this lovely illustrated guide is perfect for the young armchair adventurer. With a magic carpet as the vehicle, a curious kid checks out some incredible spots around the globe.

We have no words for this one and for good reason. The Jim Curious books are wordless explorations in which the reader dons old-fashioned 3D glasses to follow an intrepid, diving-suit-clad young explorer through rocks and ruins on a mysterious island full of fantastic wildlife. In 3D! Just the kind of cool place to get lost in on a hot afternoon.
