Why do people commit acts of violence? Sometimes outside forces influence them, and sometimes they just can’t help themselves. That’s what we’re getting from this week’s new movies on VOD, anyway. In The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, paranormal experts Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are back to tell their story of witnessing a demonic possession that leads to murder. And in No Man of God, Elijah Wood plays FBI analyst Bill Hagmaier, the one man that serial killer Ted Bundy (played by Luke Kirby) will speak to about the murders he committed. Like the Warrens, Hagmaier is not just an investigator of these crimes, he becomes ia part of the story himself.
And if murder and mayhem aren’t your thing, try Sweet Thing, a film by filmmaker Alexandre Rockwell, who cast his real life kids, Lana and Nico, and their mother, Fresh Prince of Bel Air actress Karyn Parsons, in a meditation on the resilience of children who are burdened with irresponsible parents. Lana plays Billie, a young girl who cares from her brother Nico as best she can since her father Adam (Will Patton) is a drunk, unreliable mess, and their mother (Parsons) is abusive. The film shines with great performances and an optimism that shines through the kids’ bleak situation.
These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!
You’ve heard of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but did you know that there’s also a Conjuring Universe? Over the course of eight films in the past nine years, the series of supernatural horror films that includes The Conjuring films, Annabelle, and The Nun have grossed over $2 billion and they show no signs of slowing down. The latest film in the…Converse?… is The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, which is yet another story from the files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators who hunted ghosts and reported on their findings. The Devil Made Me Do It, which once again stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the Warrens, follows the legal case of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who claims he was possessed by the devil when he murdered his landlord. The real murder took place in 1981 and was the first time “the devil made me do it” was used as a legal defense.

Ted Bundy was, no doubt, and evil and charming man. His charm was part of his evil, and he knew it. When real life FBI agent Bill Hagmaeir (played here by Elijah Wood) was sent to interview Bundy (Luke Kirby) before his execution as the only man that Bundy would agree to speak to, Hagmaier figured he would gain some insight into Bundy’s mind. Instead, he was drawn into Bundy’s twisted behavior and psyche and gets closer than he wants to to the sociopathic killer.
