Georgia football: Bulldogs 'poised to do it all or have a chance,' Bob Stoops explains - 247Sports

This could finally be the year for the Georgia Bulldogs. After falling short to Alabama in the 2017 national championship game, the Bulldogs have not returned to the College Football Playoff since, but could be poised to do so in 2021. Former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops is high on their talent and quarterback JT Daniels. Plus, the coach said he played the odds with Alabama winning a title every other year and this year being an odd year.

Stoops dove into why he likes Georgia to have a good chance to win it all this season.

“The only reason is if you look at Alabama and Coach Saban and all the championships they won, they usually do it every other year,” Stoops said Thursday on Big Noon Kickof. “So I’m banking on the odds, you know, losing some of the coaching staff, eventually, it’s going to catch up, losing eight All-Americans. So at some point that gives you a little bit of a hiccup.

“And I believe Georgia, with JT Daniels back [at quarterback] — they played so well once they named him the starter, he completed over 300 yards a game and they averaged near 40 points a game -- so that’s going to make a big difference. And I also read where they’ve got 19 former five-star recruits that are starting. Their recruiting the last 3-4 years, I think they were number No. 1 in the country, No 3 in the country, and No. 1 in the country. So you know that’s a lot of talent to match teams like Alabama, Clemson, OU as well. So I think Georgia would be one to be poised to do it all or have a chance to.”

If Georgia manages to run through the SEC and get themselves a national championship, Daniels will be the biggest key under center.

While talking about Daniels on CBS Sports HQ, Barrett Sallee spoke highly about what Daniels could do for the Bulldogs this year. For the first time since he arrived at Georgia, Daniels has had a full offseason in which he was healthy to familiarize himself with Todd Monken’s offensive scheme. Because of that, Daniels may very well find himself at the Heisman Trophy ceremony once the 2021 season is over.

“I think we are going to see the real JT Daniels. More specifically, the real JT Daniels inside of Todd Monken’s offense,” Sallee said. “You look at Georgia, and Kirby Smart made a concerted effort to change his philosophy last season when he hired Todd Monken. But you look at the offseason, you have COVID hit, you have a quarterback situation that’s a mess. JT Daniels unable to play until the beginning of November. You didn’t really get to see the full Todd Monken offense. You got a diet version of it late in the season, but you now have a somewhat normal offseason. More experience and more comfort for JT in Athens with these players in Todd Monken’s offense. I think you’re going to see a guy who is fully capable of becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist.

“This kid in this offense with the philosophical change that was unable to be installed last year is going to be a monster. For me, he got my second-team All-SEC preseason vote just because Matt Corral at Ole Miss put up filthy numbers last year. I would guarantee you that, unless something really really strange happens, he will be nearly a unanimous first-team All-SEC quarterback at the end of the season.”
