LEE COUNTY, Fla.– In the last 90 days, Lee Health reported that 98 people have died from COVID-19 at their hospitals.

Dr. Nicole Lovine, a chief epidemiologist for UF Health, said those numbers continue to climb.

“You never really know when you are at the peak until numbers start to go down. The numbers we are seeing now with hospitalizations are definitely higher than they were in 2020,” Dr. Lovine explained.

In July, Florida saw roughly 25 deaths per day but now we are seeing up to 100 people die a day of COVID across the state.

Doctors said these deaths are preventable.

“If everyone were vaccinated we would not be here,” Dr. Lovine said.

Hospitals are overwhelmed.

“It’s certainly very difficult, they are reaching their bed capacities, they are having difficulties taking care of everyone entering their facilities,” said Robert Hawkes, Physician Assistant Program Director for FGCU.

A

s of Friday, Lee Health has 91% of its hospital beds filled.

“Unfortunately, I think it’s probably going to get worse before it gets better,” Hawkes said.

As hospitals reach capacity doctors are asking you to get vaccinated.

“Until we get everyone vaccinated it’s entirely possible that we will have a surge of a different variant in the future and who knows? It could even be worse than delta,” Dr. Lovine said.
