Steven Kampfer wasn’t brought back for another stint with the B’s to fill up the scoresheet in play 25 minutes per night.

He was brought back because he’s a reliable veteran presence on the blue line who is capable of jumping into the lineup and giving you decent minutes when you need them.

Considering those expectations, Kampfer met what the Bruins asked of him last season, and you could argue that he ended his NHL career (or this phase of it, at least) on a positive note.

Due to injuries on the blue line, Kampfer played twice as many games for the B’s last season (20) as he did in 2020 (10).

He more than doubled his offensive output as well, giving the B’s a nice boost where they probably didn’t expect it; the fact that four of his five points came at even strength was icing on the cake.

Ultimately, Kampfer’s possession stats were nothing to write home about, and he certainly benefited from some generous zone starts when he was on the ice.

Still, he remained a pretty mobile defenseman with decent offensive instincts. He knew when to jump into the play (the best example that immediately springs to mind is the goal he scored against Carolina in Game 1 of the 2019 Conference Final...a deep cut).

Kampfer ultimately didn’t factor in the B’s playoff run, though they were probably only a knock or two away from needing him in a big role.

Kampfer signed with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL at season’s end, and given his age, it’s likely that he’s played his last NHL game.

Overall, you have to give Kampfer credit for a pretty decent NHL career with the Bruins: in two stints, he put up 25 points (10G, 15A) in 113 games.

He was never able to replicate his performances with the Bruins with other NHL teams, however, which is likely what led him to bounce around: he scored twice as many goals in five seasons with the Bruins (10) as he did in six combined seasons with the Panthers, Rangers, and Wild.

Kampfer heads to Russia with a Stanley Cup to his name and 234 NHL games under his belt — not a bad little career.

Happy trails, Steve.
