MCLEAN COUNTY (Heart of Illinois ABC) — The McLean County Health Department reported Wednesday that just 1% of all hospital beds are unused at Bloomington-Normal’s two hospitals, while weekly data revealed people in their 20s and children are the age groups most effected as the highly-contagious Delta variant propels COVID-19’s current surge.

The health department said the total number of patients hospitalized in McLean County with COVID-19 increased to 42 on Wednesday, from 32 on Tuesday. The health department said 29 of the 42 patients are McLean County residents.

Carle BroMenn and OSF St. Joseph Medical Centers told the health department that 99% of total beds are in use, with ICU beds 92% filled.

The rolling positivity rate for the week ending Tuesday rose to 4.1%, from 3.4% for the weekly period ending Monday.

The health department said there have been 249 deaths reported in McLean County since the start of the pandemic, unchanged from Tuesday. However, health officials said four COVID fatalities were reported over Labor Day weekend. They included two men in their 60s and one man in his 60s who did not live in a long-term care facility. A man in his 80s, who passed away, did live in a long-term care facility, the health department said.
