There is no relief in sight as Houston heads into a weekend of triple-digit temperatures.
"Unfortunately, it'll be much of the same," National Weather Service Meteorologist Tim Cady said of the weather conditions over the next few days and through the weekend. "We'll be continuing our prolonged period of very hot and humid conditions across the Greater Houston area."
Cady predicted a high forecast of 101℉ on Friday, 100℉ on Saturday and potentially 102℉ on Sunday.
Based on these conditions, Cady reiterated the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities and ensuring everyone has left a car before locking it.
"It's really a weekend to be taking heat safety precautions very seriously," Cady said. "We always stress the phrase ‘look before you lock' and that's going to be especially important heading into this weekend."
While there have been a few showers near the coast this week, the weekend will resemble the abnormally dry conditions the city has been experiencing. Cady explained that these conditions normally occur later in the summer.
"We have a really persistent ridge of high pressure that’s occupying the south-central part of the country right now, and that allows for conditions like this to occur," Cady said.
The unseasonably warm weather can also be tied to the La Niña pattern Texas has been under for the past couple of years.
Temperatures are expected to slightly decrease next week, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that the above-normal temperatures will continue for the rest of the summer.
Due to the unrelenting heat and dry weather, the City of Houston entered Stage One of its voluntary Drought Contingency Plan on Tuesday.
