For Sale: Light-Filled Hamptons Dream House - DIRT

maknains.blogspot.com

It’s usually said that it was the light that drew artists to the Hamptons, starting with Thomas Moran and Childe Hassam in the 1880s, to William Merritt Chase shortly thereafter. Jackson Pollock, in particular, loved the light in his East Hampton home so much it is often credited with changing his palette entirely and today, art world heavy hitters Ross Bleckner and Cindy Sherman maintain homes in the area.

The long spit of land that makes up the Hamptons, surrounded by water on three sides, makes for an atmosphere that has been described as wet, magical and even hallucinatory. And, arguably, the light is at its finest near the sea in Sagaponack. That might be because Sagponack, often cited as one of the most expensive zip codes in the United States, has fewer trees than some other areas thanks to the many farm fields, along with shimmering ponds near the ocean that further reflect the light that bounces off the ocean.

And this lovely estate on Fairfield Pond Road, one of the most storied streets in Sagaponack, benefits from such beautiful clear light. Of course, people pay dearly for such a place to spend their summers; set on 1.9 acres, the property is asking almost $19 million. For that, the lucky (and rich) purchaser gets a 12,205-square-foot cedar-shingled mansion with nine bedrooms and nine bathrooms, plus half a dozen powder rooms. The estate is repped by Vincent Horcasitas at Saunders & Associates.

Upon entering the designer-done house, the double-height foyer is brilliantly illuminated by clerestory windows. From there is a family room with stone fireplace and a wall of glass doors that looks beyond a stone patio and swimming pool to 15 acres of agricultural reserve. The kitchen boasts three islands — because two islands is so 2008! — a breakfast area with more French doors to admit the light, and a gas fireplace. The formal dining room is on the other side of the foyer, as is the formal living room. It too has a fireplace and French doors. There’s also an office with powder room, a junior master suite, and assorted half baths.

The second floor includes the master suite with vaulted ceiling, a fireplace and yet more French doors to a private terrace. The en-suite includes marble-tiled radiant-heated flooring, a marble steam shower, and stone countertops. Five more en-suite bedrooms, one with a balcony that offer serene views, a playroom/den and a laundry room are also on the second floor.

Like in a lot of homes in the Hamptons nowadays, the lower level is for staff and recreation. There are two more bedrooms with a full bath, a rec room, a powder room, a sauna, and a home theater with another fireplace. The copious leisure and entertaining options continue outside, where there’s an outdoor fireplace, a built-in barbecue, dedicated areas for dining and lounging, and beautifully groomed flowering gardens. The vine-covered pergola prettifies the pool house while the two car garage houses a gym and hot yoga room. Tennis aficionado? No problem, there’s room to add a court. And everywhere you look, that lovely light.
