The Royal Family has been warned to promote Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice as working royals.

Prince Andrew's daughters are currently not working members of the Royal Family, however, the "ageing" number of senior royals could lead to their promotion.

Royal commentator Richard Eden argued that the Royal Family is badly overstretched and King Charles must act.

He said: "As I have watched the King and Queen carry out engagements in East Africa, what has struck me most is that they need help.

"If we want the monarchy to continue to be as strong as it was under the late Queen, we need new recruits to 'the Firm'."

Eden suggested the King should enlist Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie as working royals.

He wrote in Palace Confidential: "King Charles should ask his sensible nieces, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, if they would like to become working royals.

"I know they have a great sense of duty, so they would be likely to agree.

"A Commonwealth realm that does not expect to see the new monarch in a hurry would, I’m sure, welcome a visit from one of his nieces."

The Royal Family has become thin in recent years due to the departure of Prince Harry and Prince Andrew as working royals.

It has been impacted too by other factors, including the fact that Queen Camilla is not a fan of flying.

Therefore, long-haul flights for the King and Queen to the Commonwealth realms are less likely.

This is a stark contrast to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who spent six months travelling across 44,000 miles of the Commonwealth with Prince Philip when she was just 25 years old.

Prince William and Princess Kate are expected to visit Australia and New Zealand before Charles and Camilla, for instance.

Eden added: "After his mother, Queen Elizabeth, succeeded to the throne at the age of 25, she embarked, with Prince Philip, on her longest-ever Commonwealth tour, lasting six months and covering 44,000 miles.

"There will be nothing remotely on that scale for the King and Queen."
