Oak Grove’s 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 win over Sacred Heart was filled with errors made by both teams in the Tuesday night match.
“I think that we could have played a lot better,” Oak Grove coach Sherry McWilliams said. “We made a lot of errors on our side, which is not good in volleyball. We have to control the game on our side and play a better mental game. We are real young, so I’m proud with how we have come out this season.”
The Lady Warriors (3-0) took a quick 7-1 lead that Sacred Heart helped make with numerous service errors.
“We were (off),” Sacred Heart coach Kerry Geroux said. “We had about seven or eight service errors tonight, which is very rare for us. That was one of our bad things, which were service errors. You work hard for a point win one or two, and then a service error gives it right back to them and gives momentum back.”
The Crusaders (1-2) cut the deficit down to 21-17, but Oak Grove closed the first set with a 4-0 run to win 25-17.
In the second set held a 13-11 lead, but Oak Grove flipped the script with Reese Plumlee kick-starting a 7-0 run with a kill and contributing two aces and two kills in the run.
Sacred Heart cut the deficit to 21-19 until a controversial call change disrupted the Crusaders’ momentum. A serving error was originally called but changed to an ace in favor of Oak Grove. The momentum shift allowed the Lady Warriors to finish the second set with a 4-1 run and win 25-20.
“We played hard,” Geroux said. “The calls maybe didn’t go our way, but that doesn’t determine the whole game. We played very hard. We let them know that we came here to play. We didn’t lay down. It was a good game, and they are a good team. If anything, they realized that we were a good team. It was a good tough game.”
The third set proved to be the most competitive on the night as it featured four ties and three lead changes late in the set.
Oak Grove continued to ride the momentum and capitalize on Sacred Heart’s errors to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Despite the slow start Sacred Heart responded with a 5-0 run to make the game 6-5. Oak Grove still maintained its momentum and held a 15-10 lead before Sacred Heart called a timeout.
The Crusaders put together its strongest response of the night with a 9-2 run. The Lady Warriors fell into an offensive drought and committed several errors while at the same time, Sacred Heart’s offense heated up and came up with two blocks and three kills in the run.
Sacred Heart took a three-point lead, which was its largest lead of the night, at 21-18. However, trailing 22-20, Oak Grove reclaimed momentum again and closed the game with a 5-0 run that Plumlee finished off with a kill.
“I think they were playing an amazing game on their end,” McWilliams said. “They really minimized their errors, and they figured out our holes on defense and put the ball where we weren’t. On our side, we had to regain our mental focus, and realize that we need to get our serves over, minimize our errors, play a good mental game and bring your teammates up.”
In total, Plumlee tallied seven kills, six aces and two blocks.
“She definitely brings a lot of energy to the court,” McWilliams said. “She can really calm everyone down when we are in a bind.”
Overall, McWilliams was pleased with how her young team handled itself down the stretch but wants her team to become more efficient and fix its errors.
“I want to see us clean up our hitting errors,” McWilliams said. “We definitely had a lot. We had a ton of service errors. Our passing was really great. I was really pleased with that. Our libero is amazing. I was also proud of how we could let our mistakes roll off. I think that we get down on ourselves, but we don’t get down on our teammates.”
