Why Seahawks filled final open roster spot with C/G Kyle Fuller - Field Gulls

maknains.blogspot.com

It’s only Thursday and the Seattle Seahawks have already placed three players on injured reserve this week. First it was free agent addition wide receiver Phillip Dorsett who has yet to take a snap with the team so far this season going on injured reserve Tuesday, with Marquise Blair and Bruce Irvin being moved to injured reserve on Wednesday.

Those moves combined to create three open roster spots, two of which the team has officially filled to this point. Word of the first leaked out Tuesday, with Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reporting that cornerback Linden Stephens would be promoted from the practice squad. That move became official on Wednesday, when the team also promoted defensive tackle Anthony Rush from the practice squad.

Wednesday Seattle head coach Pete Carroll confirmed how that final free roster spot would be filled.

And shortly after Carroll made that statement, the Seahawks made the move official.

So, Kyle Fuller, who competed with Ethan Pocic and B.J. Finney at center for the Seahawks during training camp is the 53rd man on the roster and provides extra depth on the interior of the offensive line. With Jordan Simmons currently the only true guard on the roster behind starters Mike Iupati and Damien Lewis, Fuller joins Finney as able to provide depth at the position. Fuller was eligible to return to the 53 man roster following a two game suspension for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy, and has been practicing under a league exemption following the completion of the suspension.

And props to Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune, who has predicted all week that Fuller would take one of the roster spots that came available.

What will be interesting to watch is how this affects depth at the position group in the coming weeks. Just returning to practice this week it seems unlikely that Fuller would immediately be active against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. However, once he is eased back in and up to speed, Finney, who many expected to be the starter when he was signed and who carries the second highest cap hit of all Seattle offensive linemen, could be a healthy scratch.

While the moves this week have left the Seahawks with a full 53 man roster, the Hawks currently have just 14 players on the practice squad, meaning there are two spots available to add players.
