New WVU RB commit Justin Johnson can do it all - 247Sports

Halfway through his freshman season Justin Johnson got called up to the Edwardsville (Ill.) High varsity.

“He didn’t flinch,” head coach Matt Martin stated.

In fact, West Virginia’s latest commit made an impact right away, gaining over 100 yards in his second start, and ultimately helped his team advance all the way to the final four, a 17-10 loss to Loyola.

“Shoot Loyola is one of the best teams year in and year out in our state and play in the Catholic League, one of the most physical conferences and I’m worried about asking our freshman to run the ball against them," Martin explained. "They had a free safety a year older than Justin who came downhill and hit Justin at linebacker level. He just spun off him and ran another 20 yards. I’m like whoa that’s a pretty good player he did that against.”

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Johnson has been shining ever since. Tabbed by the 247Sports Composite as the country’s No. 26 running back, Johnson is pledge No. 15 for Neal Brown and his staff in the 2021 recruiting cycle, part of a class ranked No. 4 in the Big 12.

“He’s always done great things for us,” Martin said, later pointing to Johnson being a difference-maker catching wheel routes and making things happen in the screen game as well.

“I think he’s a great teammate. I think he’s really balanced. I think he can do many things. He catches the ball well, obviously runs the ball well, he blocks well, he’s a very balanced running back.

“He usually doesn’t go down on the first hit and makes multiple people tackle him.”

As a junior Johnson averaged over 16 yards per carry in rushing for 1,120 yards and 19 touchdowns despite missing some time with an ankle injury. Other offers included California, Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue and Washington State.

“He’s a kid that shows up to practice every day, he works hard, obviously he’s blessed,” Martin said. “He’s a good student, has a very good work ethic, he’s a good leader for his teammates and he’s the kind of kid you want in your program.”

West Virginia has a lot of those type of guys in this class. In June I wrote that the Mountaineers are stacking chips on offense. Johnson is another big get.
