Media reacts to Spencer Rattler's turnover-filled outing - 247Sports

There was tons of anticipation built up for the beginning of the Spencer Rattler era at Oklahoma. Not only was Rattler a former five-star recruit, he was following a line of successful Sooners quarterbacks under coach Lincoln Riley.

Rattler, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., certainly looked the part in OU’s 48-0 win over Missouri State in the season opener two weeks ago. The sophomore was already drawing comparisons to past Sooners greats at the position, and some were expecting Rattler to be among the favorites for the Heisman Trophy at season’s end.

But in Rattler’s first outing against Big 12 competition, a chink in the armor may have been exposed.

Rattler threw three interceptions, including one in the closing seconds of No. 3 Oklahoma’s stunning 38-35 home loss to Kansas State on Saturday. OU entered the season as favorites again in the Big 12 and a legitimate contender for the College Football Playoff for the fourth consecutive year.

While OU survived a loss to K-State a season ago to make the CFP, it remains to be seen what kind of carryover, if any, Rattler’s performance will have on the Sooners in the immediate future.

Rattler threw two first-half interceptions, but he countered with three touchdown passes before halftime. He finished the day 30 of 41 passing for 387 yards with four touchdowns and the three interceptions.

In the opener against FCS-Missouri State, Rattler was nearly flawless. In his first Sooners start, Rattler was 14 of 17 for 290 yards and four touchdowns, almost all of the damage coming in OU’s 41-point first half.

“I think in this game against Kansas State, we're going to find out more about Spencer Rattler,” ESPN’s Jesse Palmer said earlier in the week. “He threw four touchdowns against Missouri State and looked great. You can see why there was so much hype. This was the number one dual threat quarterback coming out of high school...he's already been proclaimed the next heisman trophy winning Oklahoma quarterback. He's a great fit for what Lincoln Riley wants to do. He's very accurate throwing the football down the field, he has a lot of arm talent. This dude can sling the rock. He's aggressive. He likes to take shots.

Spencer Rattler is going to see better defenses down the road. I think this game, his first start against a Power Five opponent, against a team that beat the Sooners last year...this will be a better test for Spencer Rattler. I do think we're going to learn more and that he is for real.”
