STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A nationwide initiative brought about 150 bags filled with necessities for needy Staten Islanders to Sacred Heart Church, West Brighton, on Saturday.

The non-profit Walls of Love, which began in Cleveland, Ohio, by Holly Jackson, helped line the fence outside of the church Saturday with bags filled with items, like non-perishable foods, hygiene products, toys, face masks, hand sanitizer and school supplies.

According to the Facebook event, Walls of Love partnered with the Rexines family and Sacred Heart Parish to bring the wall to the community.

And there was a good turnout, as the bags were gone in less than two hours, Jackson said. She said she brought the non-profit to Staten Island after community members reached out after seeing her work on social media.

“I’ve always had a special love for New York and the surrounding areas and I love the city and I wanted to be able to do it and help the community,” Jackson said. “It was received really well. It was at Sacred Heart Church on Staten Island. They were very gracious there.”

She added that another group was at the church hosting a food drive, so community members were able to get a bag of necessities, as well as food products.

Walls of Love was founded by Jackson as an effort to pay it forward to the homeless by placing items, including basic necessities and winter gear on walls within regions of poverty. Being homeless herself once, she made it her life’s mission to pay it forward to the homeless.

And 100% of the proceeds and donations go directly to help individuals in need.

Jackson hopes to do another wall on Nov. 7 in the New York area as part of the non-profit’s mission to make 50 walls on the same day across the United States.

Anyone can donate to Walls of Love to help fill bags, and businesses and entities can support and sponsor a wall.
