CANNON FALLS

The Bombers would love a repeat of last season. They went 8-2, averaged 35 points per game and lost to Dassel-Cokato in the Class AAA state quarterfinals. D-C went on to advance to the Prep Bowl. Cannon Falls lost a number of standouts from that team and graduated 11 seniors total. But there is some excellent talent returning, led by tight end/defensive end Cam Dicke and running back/linebacker Marcus Banks. Dicke is 6-5, 225 and being recruited by a number of Division II colleges. Banks (6-2, 195) totaled 195 yards rushing a year ago, and had five receiving touchdowns. He was also one of Cannon Falls’ best tacklers. Two more experienced and talented players returning are fullback/linebacker Riley Miller and offensive lineman Mason Rosebear. Cannon Falls’ biggest challenge figures to be its inexperience on defense. It graduated seven players who were two-year starters.

LAKE CITY

The Tigers have one major trepidation regarding this season. It is their lack of depth, with just 22 juniors and seniors on the team. “We’ve got some talented kids who I really like, but numbers wise we are thin,” Lake City coach Trevor Narum said. The Tigers have one guy who’ll be carrying a massive load, running back/safety Ben Nutt. Nutt is one of the strongest players that Narum has ever coached. The 170-pound senior bench presses 305 pounds and squats more than 400 pounds. He ran for about 700 yards last season. The Tigers also have an impressive quarterback in 6-6, 210-pound junior Justin Wohlers. Wohlers threw 22 touchdown passes last year, has a great arm and is intelligent. Lake City will also be counting on senior offensive lineman/linebacker Jeremy Nguyen (5-7, 190 pounds) and 6-3 receiver/free safety Carson Matzke.

HEAD COACH TREVOR NARUM

Narum, 44, is a Mabel-Canton High School graduate who played college football at Winona State University. He became Lake City’s head coach in 2008 after five seasons as a coordinator for the Tigers. He has also previously been a head baseball coach for seven seasons.

LYLE/PACELLI

The Athletics should not be taken lightly. Not this season. After finishing 1-8 last year and 0-7 in 2018, L/P has the look of a team primed to win more than a couple of games. Second-year coach Brad Walter loves the athleticism of this group led by a foursome of seniors. Jed Nelson is at the top of that list, a 6-3, 195-pound running back and linebacker who is fast and strong. Zach Bollingberg (5-11, 170) is a solid running back/linebacker, Cole Walter (5-9, 160) is ready to make the switch from running back to quarterback and Isaiah Clennon (5-11, 190) is a multi-year starter on the offensive and defensive lines. L/P possesses plenty of team speed and has better size than in the past. It also has 30 kids out for football, grades 9-12, which is another jump for L/P. The Athletics’ biggest concern is that they have not experienced a winning season in a long time, a mental hurdle they may have to get over.

HEAD COACH BRAD WALTER

Walter is in his second season as coach of the Athletics. The 1991 Lyle High School graduate who led the Athletics into their first season in Section 3 a year ago.
