This is the last weekend to register to vote in Alaska for the 2020 general election.
Regardless of how you vote, you need to be registered. You can register online, and state election offices will be open Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 3-4) if you need help.
Here’s how to do it.
If you signed up for this year’s Alaska Permanent Fund dividend or got an Alaska driver’s license recently, you’re probably registered. Applying for the PFD automatically registers you (or updates your registration) unless you opt out. So does getting a new driver’s license.
You’re most likely to be unregistered if you recently moved to Alaska, turned 18 this year, or just finished probation. If you haven’t voted since before 2016, you might have been removed from the registry.
What do I do if I’m not registered?
It’s probably too late to physically mail it, so use a phone to take a picture of the printed and signed form and a picture of your ID, and attach those pictures to an email. Send that email to one of the elections offices listed on the second page of the form. (If you have a scanner, you can use that instead.)
Can I register in person?
Division offices in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Nome and Wasilla will be open this weekend.
What happens if I’m past the deadline and still want to vote?
If you register after the deadline, state law allows you to vote for president and vice president, but you cannot vote for any other races.
I’m out of prison and off parole. How do I register?
In addition to the normal registration process, you need to include your discharge papers or a letter showing that you were unconditionally released. Anyone convicted of a crime involving “moral turpitude” can’t register after release.
