But come Sunday at Soldier Field, the Bears didn't do a great job of finding Kamara.
The Saints running back totaled 12 carries for 67 rushing yards and nine receptions for 96 yards. While Kamara didn’t find the end zone Sunday, he instigated the short-handed Saints offense.
“He’s a good player, as we all know, for sure, just like there’s a lot of good players across this league,” Bears linebacker Roquan Smith said. "You’ve just got to step up to the plate. I just look at it just like that with any and every one, but he’s for sure a good player.”
Kamara ripped off a 20-yard run early in the game, which set the tone for the day.
Near the end of the first quarter, Saints quarterback Drew Brees connected with Kamara for a 47-yard reception. Kamara blew past Bears outside linebacker Khalil Mack, who had dropped into coverage on the play. The play helped to flip the field position in favor of the Saints.
The nail in the coffin was Kamara’s 20-yard run in overtime to set the Saints up at the Bears’ 11-yard line. Kicker Wil Lutz knocked in the game-winning field goal moments later.
With a struggling offense, the Bears once again asked their defense to carry a heavy load. At one point, the Saints scored 20 consecutive points.
“We just have to get back in the lab,” Smith said. “We have to look at this film get better from it and see what we can do to get better and give the team the best shot at winning.”
The Saints' touchdown before halftime was particularly disheartening.
Bears kicker Cairo Santos made a field goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter, putting the Bears up 13-3. The Saints took the ensuing kickoff and drove 68 yards down field in nine plays to score a touchdown before the break. Brees hit tight end Jared Cook for the score.
The Bears' lead slipped to 13-10. Kamara caught a 12-yard pass and made runs of seven and eight yards on the drive.
“That’s a tough feeling as a defense to be in a good position and give up a play like that,” defensive tackle Akiem Hicks said. “Or I would imagine at most we would want go give up a field goal in that situation because, hey, they did drive down the field. And you’ve got to respect that.”
The Saints finished the day with 394 total yards of offense. That was without top receiver Michael Thomas, and without last week’s leading receiver Marquez Callaway.
There was, though, plenty of Alvin Kamara.
