On average, Rhode Island law enforcement agencies arrest approximately 3,000 drivers for driving under the influence every year.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Rhode Island State Police have a simple yet stern message for drivers this Memorial Day Weekend. Don’t drink and drive… and if you do- you’ll be caught.
Rhode Island state and local law enforcement agencies say they are prepared for the anticipated surge of people out and about this holiday weekend- as mostly all COVID-19 restrictions across the state have been lifted after the past 14 months.
AAA Travel says they are anticipating more than 37 million people to travel 50 miles or more from home this weekend- which would be an increase of 60% from MDW 2020.
Lt. Charles Lavalley with the Rhode Island State Police, says this weekend already they have arrested dozens of suspected drivers under the influence MDW 2021- including a suspected DUI driver who hit a R.I. state police cruiser Sunday morning in Providence. He adds, they also have seen more accidents this weekend than normal, which could be attributed to rain and low visibility.
LaValley says they have patrols amped up across the state, especially on highways, and have dozens of police across the state strictly looking for drivers under the influence.
“Even if you have a few drinks- it’s just too easy for you to get a ride home. Especially with young people- you all know how to use apps; like Uber or Lyft or any other rideshare or friends. They need to do that,” LaValley says.
According to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, on average Rhode Island law enforcement agencies arrest approximately 3,000 drivers for driving under the influence every year.
Numbers surrounding DUI arrests and accidents for this Memorial Day Weekend will be released later this week.
State patrol wants to remind drivers to dial 9-1-1 or *-7-7 if they think they see a driver under the influence.
