One table at the new Wahlburgers location at MGM Springfield is different from the rest of the restaurant.
The long table, known as Alma’s family table, is filled with photos from the Wahlberg family’s childhood.
“It’s so much fun to look back,” Chef Paul Wahlberg said. “And to see my mom and my dad and different relatives in the pictures, it’s a lot of fun. And it gives people insight into who we are.”
Alma, Mark, Donnie and Paul Wahlberg’s mother, died in April.
She had often greeted patrons of her sons’ restaurants, “where she shares her infectious laugh and sense of humor with everyone who comes to dine,” according to her A&E bio.
The table had the chef reminiscing on some of his favorite times as a child during a Facebook Live with MassLive.
One day, his family borrowed his uncle’s car to all go down to Bridgewater, he said. While they were driving, they saw the car in front of them had a picnic table strapped to the top of it.
As kids, he said, they all thought, “Wouldn’t it be so cool if that thing popped off?”
It did.
“You could see that it was rocking a bit,” Wahlberg said, laughing. “It flew off the top of the car and it landed in front of us and shattered into a million pieces.”
That’s when his dad decided to turn around and go home.
“It’s a big family,” Wahlberg said. “Lots of chaos going on all the time.”
But one thing’s for sure, he said, they’re proud to be from Massachusetts.
“At the end of the day, we’re just like everybody else,” he said. “Especially being proud of being from Massachusetts, being from Boston, being from Dorchester in particular.”
The Wahlburgers Springfield location opened Tuesday after being delayed nearly a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the restaurant has locations across the U.S., this is the furthest location west in Massachusetts, as most are in or near Boston.
The Springfield location also has a bar area, which includes local chalkboard artwork, and a patio with tables and couches.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission previously approved an extension of the casino’s liquor license to include the 4,500-square-foot restaurant.
Wahlberg said he’d recommend the The Our Burger with tater tots and a Wahlbrewski.
“To me, that’s the classic American burger,” he said. “It’s so comforting to have that.”
But there are a number of other options, including the Impossible Burger for those looking for vegetarian options.
But whatever you want, he’s there to cook for the customer.
“I only make what you want,” he said. “I’m not cooking for me.”
The restaurant opened Tuesday at 11 a.m. After that hours will be Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
