A package containing white powder was sent to the home of Sen. Rand Paul — who called out ’80s pop music star Richard Marx for “encouraging violence” against him.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are investigating the package received Monday at the Republican senator’s Kentucky home, according to the FBI Louisville office’s spokesman Tim Beam. Part of the investigation is determining what the substance is.

Paul, 58, in a tweet on Monday, said: “I take these threats immensely seriously. As a repeated target of violence, it is reprehensible that Twitter allows C-list celebrities to encourage violence against me and my family.”

In a sentence that has since been removed from the tweet, he went on: “Just this weekend Richard Marx called for violence against me, and now we receive this powder filled letter.”

Marx, who is an active Twitter commenter on political topics, had tweeted Sunday in an apparent response to Paul’s statement during a radio interview that he would not be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Marx’s tweet said: “If I ever meet Rand Paul’s neighbor I’m going to hug him and buy him as many drinks as he can consume.”

Paul’s neighbor Rene Boucher attacked him in 2017 during a dispute that was allegedly over yard waste. Paul suffered broken ribs; his neighbor pleaded guilty to assault on a member of Congress. He initially served 30 days in prison but was resentenced last year to 8 months, with the judge saying the initial sentence was not commensurate with Paul’s injuries.

Marx has seized the Twitter spotlight since Paul’s public statement, blasting his critics and retweeting his supporters. In one of his milder responses, he said, “I’m the only person on Twitter who’s ever referenced Rand Paul’s neighbor. Must have been me.”

Marx, 57, lives in Southern California with his wife, former MTV host Daisy Fuentes, and he continues to write and perform music. He was previously married to actor/dancer Cynthia Rhodes (Penny in “Dirty Dancing”). His best-known songs are his 1980s hits, including “Don’t Mean Nothing,” “Should’ve Known Better,” “Right Here Waiting” and “Hold On to the Nights.”
