I have loved food halls for as long I can remember.
I grew up near the Italian enclave in the Bronx along Arthur Avenue, where a sprawling food hall was filled with vendors hawking pastas and cheeses and fish — more often in Italian than in English. One of my first stops in London is at the Borough Market, where I happily sample hard British cheeses, before buying a pound or three to nibble on as I walk to Covent Garden.
In downtown Los Angeles, I’ve watched as the Grand Central Market has grown from a pace in which to buy fruits and vegetables into a trendy destination for trendies to chew on the foods of the moment. And now, we’ve got the newly opened Glendora Public Market (905 E. Arrow Hwy., Glendora; glendorapublicmarket.com), a 19,000-square-foot space, packed with everything from the Smog City Diner to a branch of the Dog Haus to a stylish ramen shop called Bushi by Jinya, which uses “dry-aged mazesoba noodles.” A step in the recovery of the Valley as the fires begin to (hopefully) ebb.
New and notable
GV Yummy
Yes, the name makes this sprawling upscale Chinese restaurant sound like a fast-food shop in a mini-mall. But what we have is a major seafood destination, where oversized platters cover large round tables, and big groups assembled to devour every bite. Every…yummy…bite!
203 W. Valley Blvd., Alhambra; 626-872-6677
LaoBeijing Hot Pot
Not just sidewalk dining in a strip mall — but sidewalk dining in a strip mall…on hot pot. Which is usually a sweating, steamy indoor experience. And should be a treat…if the weather ever cools off enough for it to be a steamy experience.
1308 E. Valley Blvd., Alhambra; 626-696-0383
Paths to Spicy
Possibly the most uniquely named Taiwanese café, anywhere, specializing in hot pots and rice bowls — and in lots of spice. With ultra-mild milk tea drinks to wash it all down.
9566 Las Tunas Drive, Temple City; 626-782-7877
701 Restaurant and Bar
Sinaloa style Mexican seafooder, with live music, and a menu that rambles from aguachile to sushi rolls to lobster and shrimp cooked every south of the border way there is.
620 Whittier Blvd., Montebello; 562-832-9900, www.701restaurantbar.com
Loroco Bistro
You’ll find the many pleasures of rarely encountered Salvadoran cooking at this Whittier café, a land of pupusas and pastellitos — and even Salvadoran-style chow mein because…why not?
