If the artfully filtered photos taken from Palau’s now-signature profile vantage look familiar, that’s because many are plucked from his Instagram feed, where he’s populated the #HairTest hashtag with unforgettable backstage moments, such as the pastel bowl cuts for Fendi couture and acid-bright dye jobs for Valentino, as well as otherwise unpublished studio creations, casting hair of all textures into never-before-seen, gravity-defying shapes or offering up new permutations of the classics. He credits the proliferation of the photo-sharing platform as a powerful, democratic tool for creators in the beauty space; one that gives its users total ownership and control of their vision. “The book wouldn’t exist without Instagram,” says Palau. “The great thing about Instagram is that we can all be our own brand and do it in our own way. What I’m doing on my Instagram [is] very much the way I want to have my work represented.”
While, in essence, #HairTests is a chronicle of Palau’s career amid the rise of social media over the past few years, it’s one that’s inherently nostalgic, calling back to his early days as a wannabe hairdresser peering into the windows of London salons. “When you walk by salons, there are always pictures of hairstyles in the window,” says Palau. “You know, things imprint on you…and that made such an impression, because I’d always dream about who each person wearing one of these hairstyles was. When I flick through the book now, it kind of feels like if you’re in a salon and you go, ‘Oh, I like this one!’ That’s the amazing thing about my job. We are there to create fantasies and dreams so people can be inspired by them.”
