Pasadena tree lighting
Kicking things off in Pasadena is something that was sadly missing from 2020, namely the lighting of the Pasadena Christmas tree, but this year things will have a different look, said city spokeswoman Laura Branch Mireles.
“Normally we would have the tree at the corner of Southmore and Jeff Ginn Boulevard, but because there is some construction going on at the old city hall building — part of the library parking lot is going to be blocked off,” Mireles said of the Dec. 3 event. “So, we are moving the tree to the front of City Hall (1149 Ellsworth). The stage for all of the schools to perform on will be in the parking lot in front of City Hall.”
The festivities will be from 6-9 p.m.
Mireles said hopes are high that the return of the Christmas tree lighting will draw a large crowd.
In the past we have had 1,000 to 2,000 people out,” she said.
Aside from the spectacle of the tree bursting into light, there will be many other attractions.
Performing on stage that night will be a bevy of local talent, including the Pasadena High School Orchestra, Park View Intermediate’s steel drum band, two dance teams from Pasadena Memorial High School, more dancers from Twin Arts Dance Studio and the Sam Rayburn High School show choir.
There will also be a host of activities such as games and a snow village, complete with a play area and a slide.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be available for photos.
An assortment of food options will be available, Mireles said.
“The food trucks and the vendors will be lining Jeff Ginn Boulevard on either side,” she said.
Parking will be available in the Macroplaza Mall parking lot, 171 Pasadena Town Square Mall.

Pasadena parade to light up the night
After taking a pandemic-induced year off, the Pasadena Holiday Lighted Parade is also back on the calendar.
The parade is a joint event between the city and the Pasadena Strawberry Festival and will begin at 7 p.m. Dec. 4.
To say the lighted parade has been something of a big deal is a bit of an understatement. In past years there have been well over 100 groups participating in and about 30,000 spectators.
The parade will be on Fairmont Parkway, beginning at Mickey Gilley Boulevard and then heading west to Watters Road, where it will make a U-turn and head back east and finish where it started.
Given the parade’s out and back route, spectators can effectively see the parade twice.
While parking is available on side streets, it is also possible to snag a front-row seat, as many commercial businesses along Fairmont allow people to park in their lots and allow folks to watch from there.
Reindeer Park to feature snow and activities
Reindeer Park is scheduled from 4-9 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center, 500 W. 13th St., Deer Park. Participants must purchase tickets before the event — on-site ticket sales will not be offered.
Wristbands including access to snow areas, games, s’mores and other activities cost $10 and will be sold from 8 a.m. Nov. 19 through 3 p.m. Dec. 3 or until sold out.
The bands will be for sale at 281-478-2050 or at the Deer Park Community Center, 610 San Augustine St. or at https://bityl.co/9c0k. They can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 2-3 at the community center. Tickets that have not been picked up before the event will be available at the will-call desk.
For more information, visit https://bityl.co/9bvu or call 281-478-2050.
The day before Reindeer Park, the city of Deer Park will have its tree-lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Municipal Court and Theater Building, 1302 Center St., Deer Park. Performers at the event will include the Junior Art Park Players, and Christmas cookies and candy canes will be provided by the City of Deer Park Historical Committee.
Hard to miss the jolly old elf
If folks can’t find Santa Claus in Deer Park, they’re not looking.
Santa will tour Deer Park with the help of the city’s volunteer fire department from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 8-10. Each night, he will hit a different part of the city and the aim is to blanket all of Deer Park.
As an added attraction, Santa’s helpers will distribute candy along the routes.
If the event must be canceled because of bad weather or an emergency in the city, the reschedule date will be Saturday, Dec. 11 beginning at 6 p.m. For more information, check out the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page, “Deer Park Fire Department,” as well as city's web site, www.deerparktx.gov.
The routes for each night will be posted on the city’s website.
The city of La Porte is offering residents a place to get photos with Santa through a new, free event, Santa Sightings By The Bay, from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 9 and 16 at Five Points Plaza, 100 S. Broadway St., La Porte.
Kids can meet Santa, take pictures and hand-deliver Christmas wish lists. No registration is necessary.

Hometown Holidays will benefit music education
Silver Sycamore is bringing back Hometown Holidays and Trail of Lights for its third go-round.
Silver Sycamore, 5111 Pine in Pasadena, is a venue that specializes in weddings and other special events in a rustic setting. Hometown Holidays and Trail of Lights will be held from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 16-23.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Time to Level the Playing Field, an organization that provides musical instruments to local school children.
The event will feature more than 100,000 lights, an 18-foot-tall Christmas tree, Santa Claus, shopping and food.
Tickets are available at https://bityl.co/9btI and cost $12 for adults and $9 for kids ages 4-12. Children age 3 and under are admitted free of charge.
Several specialty nights have also been scheduled.
On Dec. 16, the bands from South Houston High School and Jackson Intermediate School are scheduled to perform, as are the Pasadena Memorial High School Choir and that school’s dance troupe.
On Dec. 17, the Dobie High School Jazz Band and the Sam Houston High School Choir will get their moments in the spotlight.
Country artist Randy Meadows will take the stage Dec. 18, while the Revels Performing Arts Dance Studio will perform Dec. 19 and the Tubadours on Dec. 20.
Magician Paul Driscoll and the Pasadena Philharmonic Woodwinds will be featured Dec. 21, and kids from Atkinson Elementary and Traci Cooper perform on Dec. 22.
The Jake Bush Band will close out festivities on Dec. 23.
Parking is available at Golden Acres Elementary, 5232 Sycamore, and trolley service will shuttle event-goers back and forth.
