There’s just one exception. The Ducks are the team getting the best version.
Milano is playing at a level many wondered if he would ever reach. Working in partnership with the dynamic Trevor Zegras, the 25-year-old winger has seven goals and 12 assists in 21 games.
It is easily the best start of his seven-year NHL career, and it sets him up to smash his career-highs of 14 goals in 2017-18 with the Blue Jackets and 23 points in 2019-20 with Columbus and the Ducks. On Monday night in Washington, Milano played a career-high 22 minutes, 23 seconds, and delivered a goal and assist in Anaheim’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Capitals.
In his postgame interview session, coach Dallas Eakins intercepted a question headed in the direction of how Milano is playing.
“Better than he ever has,” Eakins said. “Anywhere. Any other organization. It’s amazing now. Hey, Sonny, is interested in being a 200-foot hockey player. He wants to be a difference-maker. And his habits continue to improve every night.”
Part of it has been taking advantage of opportunities presented to him. Most recently, that has included Adam Henrique’s absence due to a lower-body injury.
