FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - Leaders of two organizations that will become prime tenants of Electric Works got a guided tour Friday through the spaces that will be their respective new homes. One of those tenants is moving its world headquarters to the project, while the other will create a learning environment for high school students who want training for science, technology and entrepreneurship careers.
The developers and construction managers took reporters on a tour of the abandoned General Electric campus on Broadway south of downtown. One of the spaces viewed is inside Building 31, which will eventually host the Fort Wayne Community Schools “Amp Lab at Electric Works”. Creative learning models will be part of the curriculum and students will at times connect with business tenants that locate in the complex.
Those relationships could help students tackle problems companies confront routinely in the business world.
“We should not be learning in a vacuum, we should be engaged with community leaders and community resources and that means the classroom is no longer four walls, the classroom is every place you go,” said FWCS Superintendent Mark Daniel.
There was also a brief tour of Building 26, future home of the world headquarters for Do it Best Corporation. Company leaders were on the walk-through and admired work to protect historical aspects of the old GE campus, including installation of special windows that welcome in a lot of natural light.
“We want that dynamic space, we also want a place where our team can do their very best work everyday and a place they want to come to,” said Dan Starr, the President and CEO of Do it Best Corporation.
Construction crews need to keep moving on both spaces. The “Amp Lab at Electric Works” must be ready to open in August for the start of school next fall. Do it Best plans to re-locate its headquarters to the campus in September or October.
