In How I Got Here, Black and brown creatives explore how they worked their way to the top of the fashion industry. In conversation with Vogue, these editors, social media stars, and more reveal the unforgettable moment that would change their careers completely. How I Got Here offers (stylish) life lessons, in the artists’ own words.

Richie Shazam Khan is a model, photographer, and creative director whose primary focus is cultivating meaningful connections with people. The non-binary force in fashion has walked the catwalks in Paris and photographed Zendaya for the cover of Interview magazine. Khan’s approach to success can be defined in three words: authentic, personable, and passionate. Here, she walks Vogue through where it all began.

I feel as if I'm living my life and just being Richie. This is my identity, I show people everyday exactly who I am. I walk with my experiences and my truth always. I treat everyone the same, so I feel like every opportunity that's given to me comes from a place that is well deserved.

One personal moment was when I was casted for the Vivienne Westwood 2018 fall catwalk. It was an entirely insane moment for me to be a part of something so iconic. All of my worlds were coming together and being embraced at once. That was my “wow” moment. I’m from Jamaica, Queens, so making my way to the runway in Paris was unreal. The Vivienne Westwood show placed me in a historic lineage of incredible models that have been a part of these shows for so long. But I knew what my being there represented.

I quickly realized it's a blessing to be connected to both brands and people who support my creative vision. I’m totally putting myself out there as a model and photographer. I never thought that I would be a part of the [fashion] narrative, let alone have a say, but my contributions are redefining and recreating what these spaces can look like. There are artists like myself in this industry just waiting for the opportunities that I’ve been fortunate enough to have. I want the work that I do to create more space for those artists. It isn’t just about pushing gender or identity narratives but fashion as a whole forward.
