A young man is under arrest after authorities say he tried to smuggle illegal drugs into the Walker County Jail while the chief deputy was standing just yards from him.
Chief Deputy Anthony Leach was standing beside his vehicle making a phone call Tuesday morning when authorities say 22-year-old Gabrill Channell, who is no stranger to law enforcement, walked up to the fence at the jail and tied a sock containing crystal meth and marijuana to the fence.
Channell was within 20 yards of the chief deputy and three investigators.
The plan, said sheriff’s spokesman T.J. Armstrong, was that an inmate worker would retrieve the drugs and try to sneak them into the jail.
“Chief Leach – stunned at the guy’s stupidity – walked over and took Channell into custody,’’ Armstrong said.
Channell was charged with attempting to elude, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and first-degree possession of marijuana.
Leach then instructed investigators to locate Channell’s vehicle.
Investigators Jason “Smooch” Bridges and Joe Herron, along with Jail Capt. Jottie Tidwell, went outside to see the Channell’s getaway drivers parked illegally in a handicapped parking spot. They had already circled the block in an effort to pick him up.
Tiffany Lindsey and Alexander Mann, Armstrong said, were also both in possession of illegal narcotics.
Lindsey is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Mann has been charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug araphernalia.
“It’s never a good idea to try to sneak drugs into the jail,’’ Armstrong said. “But if you do, we don’t advise doing it while the cops are watching— especially the chief deputy.”
