A high school teacher in Fort Worth may face termination after failing to intervene when a student made multiple racial slurs during a classroom presentation.
Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Kent Parades Scribner is recommending that a Paschal High School teacher “no longer be employed” by the district after video of the incident was shared on social media.
The video, which was first reported by WFAA-TV (Channel 8), shows a student using the slurs as he reads from a piece of paper in front of the class. In the video, a person believed to be a supervising teacher steps in to redirect the student — but does not stop him.
“The point is not to be offended,” the adult tells the class at one point. “It’s his interpretation.”
In a letter to Paschal families, school administrators called the language “inexcusable.”
Scribner, in a statement, said he was “disgusted by the inexcusable behavior that took place in a Paschal High School classroom.”
“There is no place for this kind of language in our society, much less in our schools,” he wrote. “I am appalled by the conduct of the adult in the room and saddened by the message that it sends to our students.”
Two organizations — Ministers of Justice Coalition of Texas and Pastors for Progress — held a press conference Thursday to denounce the video and to call for further investigation into the district by the U.S. Department of Education.
“This will not be tolerated any longer,” said Kyev Tatum, the coalition’s president and pastor of New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth.
