Birmingham-based shopping app Shipt today laid off about 3.5% of its filled positions today, according to a company statement, and closed “many” open positions.

Molly Snyder, Shipt’s Chief Communications Officer, said the layoffs came after a review of “the needs of our business and our team.”

“Our business and industry have changed dramatically in the past few years, and to keep Shipt competitive and healthy, we ultimately made the difficult decision to eliminate select positions across the organization,” Snyder said.

“These decisions are never easy to make, and we have worked for months to do everything we could to avoid having to take this step.”

Snyder said all impacted team members will have the opportunity to remain on payroll through November. Beyond that, they will be provided with “comprehensive severance packages that include outplacement support and benefits continuation.”

Snyder said the layoffs were proportionally distributed “across our full footprint.” Earlier this year, Shipt counted nearly 850 corporate employees in Alabama, most of whom are based at the Birmingham HQ.

Shipt saw huge gains during the pandemic, but failed to meet hiring targets that would have triggered local and state incentives.

This year has already seen thousands of layoffs among tech companies, though the larger ones were announced this winter among Google parent company Alphabet, PayPal, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and others.
