Is Ziwe getting an interview with George Santos?
That was a deal seemingly agreed to on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday between Santos, the disgraced congressman, and Ziwe, the comedian-writer-interviewer.
It all started Saturday, when Ziwe responded to an X user who had posted photos of both Santos and Ziwe with the message, “This interview would irreversibly change the course of history.” Ziwe responded with “my literal dream.”
Then Ziwe messaged to Santos: “.@MrSantosNY would you be interested in a pay-per-view interview? you’d be an iconic guest.”
On Sunday, the former Republican representative replied, “Let’s do it @ziwe,” with a winking emoji with its tongue sticking out. Ziwe reposted his response on her feed.
There would be no shortage of questions for Ziwe to ask. Santos has been in the news quite a bit lately. On Friday, he became the first U.S. House member to be expelled in more than 20 years. He is also only the sixth House member in history to be removed by his colleagues.
Santos’ expulsion marked the end of a congressional career plagued by scandal. Once hailed as a political up-and-comer after flipping a district from Democrats last year, Santos became the subject of a scathing ethics report on his conduct after details about his life story were found to be embellished or false. Among the claims he later admitted to fabricating were that he hailed from Jewish ancestors and worked at top Wall Street firms including Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, along with where he went to college.
Santos also faces trial next year in New York after being indicted on 23 counts of stealing from his campaign and lying to Congress. He has pleaded not guilty.
On Saturday, news broke that HBO Films is developing a movie about Santos based on Mark Chiusano’s book The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos, which was released on Nov. 28.
According to the logline, the film tells “the story of a seemingly minor local race that wound up a battle for the soul of Long Island, and unexpectedly carved the path for the world’s most famous (and now disgraced) congressman. The Gatsby-esque journey of a man from nowhere who exploited the system, waged war on truth and swindled one of the wealthiest districts in the country to achieve his American Dream.”
Ziwe, meanwhile, interviewed numerous celebrities on her eponymous Showtime talk show, which ran for two seasons. She recently released a book titled Black Friend.
