A’s Matt Olson debuts mustache, homers twice: ‘I didn’t do it to look good’ - San Francisco Chronicle

The thinking behind the mustachioed look Matt Olson debuted Wednesday night?

“Well, I didn’t do it to look good,” the A’s first baseman said Thursday.

“You know what they say, it’s never too early to hit the panic button. I was clearly searching for a couple of knocks and luckily got them.”

Olson, who was 5-for-36 going into Wednesday’s game, homered twice in the A’s 6-4 win over the Rangers. So, yes, he said, the mustache is staying for the moment.

“I think it has to now,” Olson said on a video call. “Not even by choice.

“The people back home were grilling me about how bad it looked. But everybody here was pretty on board — after the game.”

Manager Bob Melvin noted that third baseman Matt Chapman “has been known to run out that same mustache, even though Olson’s got a little more growth going on than Chapman. I think Chapman, it would take him a couple years to get a mustache that actually looks like a mustache.

“But if that mustache allows him to hit two homers a game, I’m all for it.”

Facial hair aside, Melvin said after the win that Olson’s at-bats had looked better over his last couple of games — Olson drew three walks in the series finale at Seattle and was hitting the ball the other way. Olson said going the opposite way with outside pitches is “a good sign” and pointed to his sharp groundout to the left side Wednesday as an example.

“I feel like I’ve stayed in the zone pretty well. I’m walking a decent bit, so that’s normally an indicator that I’m not chasing a bunch of stuff,” Olson said. “I just haven’t been hitting the mistakes when they’ve been there and putting myself behind in some counts. But hopefully last night’s that indication that it’s coming around and the work is the right work and I’m going to get those mistakes.”

The A’s hit four home runs in Wednesday night’s win over the Rangers and have scored all 12 runs in their past three home games via the homer. They will face a left-hander in Texas’ Mike Minor going for a three-game sweep in Thursday’s series finale. Here’s the A’s lineup behind right-hander Mike Fiers:

SS Semien

CF Laureano

3B Chapman

LF Canha

1B Olson

2B Pinder

DH Davis

RF Piscotty

C Murphy
