Park your honky-tonk badonkadonk, grab a plate of ribs and get ready to spin a romping new track from Trace Adkins.
Adkins delivers a taste of Cajun-inspired country fun with his latest release, "Just the Way We Do It." The track — a belly-rubbin' ode to no-pressure good times — comes off his forthcoming EP, "Ain't That Kind of Cowboy," out Oct. 16 via Verge Records.
Jeffrey Steele, Danny Myrick, Kip Raines and Bart Allmand co-wrote the tune, which Adkins said he recorded after being attracted to its Louisiana influence.
A native of Sarepta, Louisiana, he told The Tennessean: "I'm from the northern part of the state. Cajun influence really isn't as prevalent where I'm from. Still, when I started playing music, I was working with a band from Lafayette, Louisiana, and we'd go play festivals down there. I was exposed to a lot of that stuff. I always liked it. It kinda felt like home to me."
Plus, it's "just a fun song," Adkins added.
"Every now and then you just gotta cut something for fun," he said.
In the chorus, Adkins sings, "Well that's all right/ Get ya some ribs/ Wash it on down with a couple of beers/ Ain't nobody getting hurt, so don't be scared/ That's just the way we do it 'round here."
The song comes with a lively music video, directed by Michael Stryker and Andrew Rozario, where "... Do It" provides the soundtrack to a rip-roaring good time. Beer gets sloshed, plates overflow with grub and a dance-off breaks out — all while Adkins plays party patriarch.
How's he feel about being the resident "old man" at this get-together?
"That's kinda where I'm at," he said. "I've got kids and grandkids. It's that resignation, like, 'OK. This is gonna happen. Here we go.' You just resign yourself to it, play along and ... make sure nothing too crazy's going on. Let 'em have their fun."
He added, "It felt pretty familiar."
Adkins — a Grand Ole Opry member known for best-selling singles "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk," "You're Gonna Miss This" and more — releases his new EP via Verge Records, a Nashville label relaunched last year by longtime producer Mickey Jack Cones.
He's previewed three songs off the Verge debut, including stay-at-home anthem "Better Off" and goofball country number "Mind On Fishin'."
Backed by a new label (the move "just made sense" for Adkins to team with a longtime creative partner, he said), "Ain't That Kinda Cowboy" also features “Big" — a song co-written by John Pierce with Brothers Osborne members John and TJ Osborne — and "Running Into You," a James Slater and Tony Lane ballad.
"The remainder of (the release) ... there's a ballad and a couple of mid-tempos," Adkins said. "It's a little more sedate, but not unusual for anybody that's followed my career. I love to do that stuff."
