Authorities shut down several lanes of north Interstate 5 near Del Mar on Tuesday afternoon after a tractor trailer hauling scrap metal caught fire on the freeway.
No injuries were reported in the blaze, which erupted a little before 1 p.m. near Del Mar Heights Road, a few miles north of where north I-5 and Interstate 805 merge, according to the California Highway Patrol and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The big rig was hauling a 30-foot trailer filled with scrapped, compacted vehicles, authorities said. It produced a fire that “won’t stop burning,” according to a CHP incident log.
San Diego Fire-Rescue crews spent hours dousing the flames, and remained at the scene battling the pesky fire as of 3:30 p.m., according to authorities.
Traffic slowed to single-digit speeds approaching the fire as authorities shut down four freeway lanes to give the fire crews space to extinguish the blaze.
