He finished second in at the NDGA best ball with Adam Van Raden in Bismarck. He finished third at the NDGA stroke play in Grand Forks.

On Sunday, the Grand Forks native added a first-place finish to this summer's list.

Playing an event he's dominated of late, Schaefer won the Grand Forks All-City Golf Tournament, finishing with a two-day total of 140.

It marked Schaefer's third-straight all-city title and the fourth in five years. He's won it in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Schaefer, who played prep golf at Grand Forks Red River and college golf at UND, sat atop a leaderboard that was filled with former UND golfers.

Ryan Ames, who played at UND, finished second with a two-day total of 141, one shot back of Schaefer. Brandon McGarry, an incoming freshman at UND and the Day 1 leader, finished third with 142. Former all-city champ Matt Norby, a UND alum, finished fourth.

The opening 18 holes were played Saturday at King's Walk. The final 18 holes were played Sunday at Grand Forks Country Club, Schaefer's home course.

"I played pretty well," Schaefer said. "I hit it pretty decent.

"The greens are probably the best they've been in 10 years. They started doing a new regimen on the greens about two or three years ago and it's really taking its full effect now."

A rally on the back nine

Schaefer, who trailed McGarry by one shot after Saturday, made a big comeback on the back nine Sunday.

He was down three strokes through 11 holes at the Country Club when things started to turn.

Schaefer made up one stroke on No. 12 due to a McGarry bogey. On the par-4 No. 13 hole, Schaefer drove the green and two-putt for a birdie to make up another stroke, pulling within one.

"That was a big point for my round, to knock it on the green and get a birdie there," he said.

On the par-4 No. 15 hole, McGarry posted a seven, while Schaefer nabbed a par to take the lead. McGarry came back and birdied No. 16 to make it close, though.

Schaefer, whose father, Todd, is the UND men's golf coach, said it was nice to see the success of Fighting Hawks golfers.

"Obviously, with everything that's been going on with the golf team, that was cool to see," Schaefer said. "I like to see UND players play well. I think the (final leaderboard) was pretty accurate with how (the UND alums) played this weekend."

Schaefer said he was pleased with his two-round score, shooting a 67 and 73. His only big mistake was hitting a ball in the water on the par-3 No. 8 hole Sunday.

"I don't play quite as much as I used to, but it's been all right," Schaefer said of his summer. "I hadn't played a ton of events, but I thought I played pretty well at the Birchmont. I was in position to win in the stroke play, but I didn't close that one out and ended up third."

On Sunday, he closed it out.
