The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry’s Center for Workforce Information & Analysis has released its list of “high priority occupations” -- jobs that it says are in demand, have higher skill needs and are most likely to provide family-sustaining wages. The department said it combined statistical data with regional expert input to create the list.
The department’s list for south central Pennsylvania, which is valid from Aug. 1 to July, 31, 2021, lists 94 occupations. The region includes Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties.
With the state unemployment rate at 13.7% in July, 10.2% nationally for July and at 11.3% in the Harrisburg-Carlisle region for June, the list may provide some insight for those looking for work, possibly changing career paths as well as those people who may be entering the workforce in the future.
The list below includes the 94 occupations that are in demand in the region, the level of education or the training needed for each job, the average annual salary and an estimate on how many of those jobs will be available in the region annually through 2026.
Many of the jobs on the list require short, moderate and long term on-the-job training, while others require post-secondary training or a college degree. Some of the most in-demand jobs on the list include customer service representatives, industrial truck and tractor operators, and heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.
